Between balancing books and a budget, what student has enough time or money to spend on hair?
College can create special challenges for curly girls. With living space at a premium, it’s hard to find room for the many curly hair products we might have used back home to keep our curls looking great, and shower time is often limited when you’re sharing bathroom space with more than one other woman. Then there’s the necessity of walking to class in all types of weather, spending time in overly dry or humid dorm rooms, houses and apartments… and don’t forget the rust-colored water that sometimes gushes from communal showers. Yuck!
Starting university doesn’t mean you have to abandon the notion of having great-looking hair for four or more years. Here are some tips and ideas to keep your back-to-school hair simple, quick, cheap – and fun!
Do it up: After pulling an all-nighter studying for midterms or finals, hairstyling will be the least of your concerns. For those mornings where you need an extra jolt of caffeine just to roll out of bed, pull your hair back into a cute ponytail (or pony-puff, depending on your curl pattern) and accessorize with colorful headbands or pins. Spray limp or flat curls with water and apply a bit of styling product to bring the “boing!” back, and you’ve got a fab style ready for day or night. For a cute and somewhat funkier look, try pulling your hair into two scrunchies or fabric bands to make Afro puffs. They aren’t just for kids!
Keep it short and sweet: College is the perfect time to do the “big chop” you’ve been considering for a while, but were too scared to try before because of what friends and family might say. University campuses are the perfect places for self-expression, so why not experiment with a whole new look? Short curls also means less time in the shower conditioning and detangling, another plus for a busy scholar. You might be surprised how freeing it is to cut it all off, and the response is often pretty positive.
Grow long: Take the opposite approach from the big chop and let it grow out with locks or braids. The initial time investment might be great, but once your style starts taking shape, daily maintenance should be minimal – perfect for active coeds.
Need more support? See if your campus has a natural hair club. At the university where I work, the curly community comes together each semester to share hair tips, try new styles and swap old products for new ones. If a club doesn’t already exist, start one yourself – you’re likely not the only one seeking curly hair solutions and sisterhood at your school.
Study hard, have fun and enjoy your curls!
