TOOL TIME (WAVY HAIR)

post/design: Kristin Ess

Time for the wavy girl’s checklist! As you know, we posted this “Tool Time” list for curly girls a couple days ago. These lists aren’t about brands, just about tools. Each one serves as a checklist so you can be sure you have all the tools you need (for your hair type) to maximize those good hair days. Here we go wavy lady…

  1. Detangling brush- Wavy hair often tangles up. You’ll need this brush.

  2. Shower cap- Sometimes you want to skip a wash with waves because you need your natural oils! Decrease the chance of your waves turning to frizz by always having a shower cap near the shower.

  3. Dual sided comb- This serves a couple of purposes… the wide side is for detangling and the fine side is for smoothing. With wavy hair, you can take this in the shower to comb any difficult tangles out and then once your hair is dry, you can smooth down flyways near your part with the fine side.

  4. Various curling irons- The coolest thing about wavy hair is you can change the size of your waves. Keep various sizes of irons around. Some days you feel like big smooth waves, some days tighter/springy waves. Either way, your natural wave will only add support and keep the work you do with a curling iron from falling out.

  5. Strong sectioning clips- For girls who want to blow out their natural waves, I recommend getting some strong “shark clips” like these. They hold loads of hair and stay put. Very helpful.

  6. Thick ponytail holders- You can’t ever have enough of those thick ponytail holders around the house. Why do they always disappear though? Where do they go???

  7. Spray bottle- I always tell my clients with wavy hair to keep a spray bottle in the bathroom filled with 1/2 water and 1/2 leave-in conditioner. This a great refresher for waves. Not too heavy, but helps lock your waves back up at the end of a long day or before going out.

  8. Diffuser- Gotta have it. We’ll be doing a post on types of diffusers soon as well as a tutorial on how to properly use one. This is so important if you want MORE wave.

  9. Natural bristle round brush- If you’re going to blow out waves, please use this type of brush. You need lots of natural bristles to get good tension and to smooth out your hair. Avoid metal round brushes, please! My favorite brand is Ibiza because they last forever.

  10. A powerful blowdryer- Again, if you’re going to blow out waves, you want to do it right so it will last. You need a powerful blowdryer with various heat settings, wind settings and a cold button.

Stay tuned for the straight hair “Tool Time” checklist! Got any secret weapons for waves? You KNOW we wanna hear em in the comments below. xo
